Printer-Friendly Number of FedEx NTDC Competitors Nears Century Mark
Following TDCs in Massachusetts, Michigan and Pennsylvania, eight additional FedEx state champs will be packing their bags and heading to the NTDC in Pittsburgh in August. Our current tally of NTDC competitors stands at an impressive 96, with two state competitions still to come.
Massachusetts
In the Bay State, Bill Anthony (FedEx Express, East Boston) captured his fourth state title with a win in the 5-Axle class. He also posted the best score in the Pre-Trip Inspection. Joining Bill in the winners’ circle were Joseph Brennan (FedEx Express, Needham), whoearned first place in the Step Van class, and William Oakes (FedEx Freight, Springfield), who won the Twins title.
FedEx Express also had seven other top finishers in Massachusetts:
- Timothy Schofield ( West Yarmouth): second, Step Van
- Elliott Smith ( East Boston): second, Tank Truck
- Joseph Surette ( East Boston): second, Flatbed
- Karen Tierney ( Franklin): second, 5-Axle Sleeper
- Michael Levicki (West Boylston): third, Step Van
- Mary Lewalski ( East Boston): third, 5-Axle Sleeper
- Kathy Vantassell ( East Boston): Highest Written Exam Score
Michigan
Jim Fisher (FedEx Freight, Toledo, Ohio) became a three-time Wolverine State champ with a win in the 3-Axle class. Also winning his third state title was Chris Thomas (FedEx Freight, Flint), who captured the top spot in Twins for the second straight year.
Rounding out the trio of state champs in Michigan was Ron Metternick (FedEx National LTL, Grand Rapids), who achieved first place in the Tank Truck class.
Other drivers who earned hardware at the Michigan TDC included:
- Robert Sikes (FedEx Freight, Toledo): Rookie of the Year
- Mark Duensing (FedEx Freight, Warren): second, Twins
- Kenn Zelten (FedEx Custom Critical owner-operator, Menominee): second, 5-Axle Sleeper
- Kevin Derrick (FedEx Freight, Jackson): third, Straight Truck
- Tom Jordan (FedEx Express, Romulus): third, 5-Axle
Pennsylvania
Two Harrisburg-based competitors from FedEx Ground are headed across the state to Pittsburgh after picking up titles at the Keystone State TDC. Sam Leaper (contractor’s driver) captured the top spot in 3-Axle, and John Nash (contractor) won the Step Van class.
Other FedEx drivers who earned top-three finishes in Pennsylvania were:
- Jeff Kohler (FedEx Ground contractor’s driver, Harrisburg): second, 4-
Axle - Sal Vincelli (FedEx Ground contractor, Allentown): second, Step Van
- Robert Walker (FedEx Freight, Snow Shoe): second, Twins
- John Casey (FedEx National LTL, Scranton): third, 4-Axle
- Mark Walker (FedEx Express, Linwood): third, 3-Axle
- Mike Wiest (FedEx Ground contractor, Harrisburg): third, Twins
The team from FedEx Ground also posted the second-best score in the Large Teams category. And in the state’s TDC Cookoff competition, Rex Warner (FedEx Freight) was the champ, while Rick Starnes (FedEx Ground) came in second.
After a break for the Fourth of July holiday weekend, the 2009 season will wrap up July 10-11 in Iowa and New Jersey. Best of luck to all of the Team FedEx competitors!
