Want to increase awareness and reach new customers? You don’t need a lot of money to make a splash. Just a little creativity.

To keep your business growing, you need to keep promoting. Here are some creative ways to keep your name in front of current customers, attract new customers — and keep them coming back for more.

  1. Advertise everywhere with vehicle magnets.
    Think about how many people see your car — on streets and highways, in parking lots, while parked in front of your house or office. A vehicle magnet can put your full-color logo, phone number and URL in front of thousands of eyes — and potential new customers and clients. Because it’s easily removed and reapplied, you can use it only when you want to.
  2. Go where your customers are.
    Does your product or service appeal to young people? Post flyers and coupons on bulletin boards at your local community college. Does it appeal to senior citizens? See if your local senior center or retirement community will let you distribute flyers or business cards. Want to reach businesses? You’ll find local business professionals at Chamber of Commerce, Rotary and other organizational meetings.
  3. Sponsor a local youth sports team.
    Baseball, softball and other youth sports teams regularly ask for sponsors, and reward them with recognition — often in the form of signs and banners hanging at the field. Hundreds and possibly thousands of young people, parents and grandparents can see them throughout the season. An appreciative league may also be willing to let you put flyers or business cards at the snack bar or another appropriate venue — just ask.
  4. Encourage referrals.
    Satisfied clients are your best salespeople. Ask customers and clients to refer their friends and reward them with a special discount or gift when the referral becomes a customer. For best results, offer an incentive to both the current customer and the new customer. Promote your “refer-a-friend” offer through direct mail to your customer list, with flyers in your location, and on your website.

    Whether or not you have a website, be sure to set up a Facebook page for your business. Promote it in your other marketing materials to drive traffic. Also consider using Pinterest, Twitter and LinkedIn to keep in touch with current and prospective clients and customers. It’s important to keep your page fresh and relevant, so devote a little time to updating your page regularly.

    QR Codes, or Quick Response Codes, are those square matrix barcodes you’re starting to see everywhere. Most anyone with a smart phone can scan the QR Code for quick and easy access to a company’s website or Facebook page. Use a QR Code on outdoor signs and banners so potential customers can learn about your business as they pass by. Include them on flyers, business cards and other materials as a quick way to engage customers and provide more information about your products and services.
  7. Increase sales from current customers.
    While it’s important to grow your customer base, remember that your current customers are your best customers. Up-selling and cross-selling are easy and inexpensive ways to increase profits. Use indoor banners and posters to promote little-known products and services for your customers to try. Bundle products or services together, or offer special discounts on multiple purchases. With a little imagination, you can keep your business growing and thriving.
