Save more on shipping by knowing what you need

Customer at FedEx Office front counter

You know you need this package to go from point A to point B, so you walk into a FedEx location. The helpful team member then asks you which shipping option you’d like to choose. “Options?” you ask yourself, a bit overwhelmed. “I just need it to go from here to there on time and for a reasonable price.”

We want to break down all of your FedEx® shipping options so that you can choose the best one for your needs and save some money along the way.

FedEx Express, FedEx Ground — what are the differences?

FedEx shipping is divided into two main services types, based on their shipping procedures: FedEx Express and FedEx Ground. FedEx Express is fast, comes with a time-specific delivery commitment with a money-back guarantee, and the white shipping packages and boxes are included.

The shipping process for FedEx Ground is still fast (faster to more locations than UPS Ground), and the delivery window is by end of day, rather than by a specific time during the day. You provide your own packaging, or you can purchase boxes and get it packed when you arrive at FedEx Office. In general, if your package is bigger or heavier, or if you don’t need it to arrive by a certain time of day, FedEx Ground will be your most economical option.

If you are shipping some items that are regulated as dangerous goods via air services (certain liquids, lithium batteries, etc.), consider FedEx Ground, since the FAA restricts these items from aircraft. You still get end-to-end tracking and service either way.

FedEx driver delivering packages

Standard shipping that’s fast and reliable

FedEx Ground is a solid option for saving money when sending a package that isn’t extremely urgent. Most package deliveries arrive in 1–5 business days (3–7, to and from Hawaii and Alaska), but you don’t have to guess how long it will take. Once we know the origin and destination, we can tell you what day it will be scheduled to arrive and, so there is no guesswork.

FedEx Ground® shipping offers a lot more than just speedy delivery. Your package recipient can request an evening delivery so that they can be there when their package arrives. You can track your package easily to know when it’s delivered and rest assured that your package will arrive safely and on time.

For a real-world example, let’s say you need to ship an iPad from Dallas to your best friend in Chicago. Your package weighs 2 lbs., and your box is 13" x 11" x 2". Using FedEx Ground, you will be able to ship that package for as little as $10.78 and it will arrive in only two business days!* Not only is FedEx Ground fast and it is also surprisingly affordable, so it is worth checking rates with the other guys. In cases, FedEx is not only the fastest but the most affordable!

*Again, this is a very specific example. Declared value and additional service options cost extra. To discover how to estimate your shipping cost, check out this article.

Express shipping for urgent packages

Sometimes you’re on a tight deadline, or you need it delivered by a specific time of day. That is where FedEx Express® shipping comes in. It has options based on several different levels of priority.

Let’s say it is Monday, and you need a package delivered by Thursday evening. FedEx Express Saver® is going to be your go-to. It offers three-day delivery. If you wanted to ship that iPad to your best friend in Chicago from Dallas, FedEx Express Saver would cost as little as $19.82.

If you need that iPad to arrive a day earlier, by the end of the day on Wednesday, you will want to look into FedEx 2Day®. This gets your package from Dallas to Chicago in two days, and that 2-lb. package will cost as little as $25.42. Now if you need it there in the morning on Wednesday, we offer FedEx 2Day® A.M. Your package will be scheduled delivery in the morning on the second day. This service will cost as little as $29.15 to Chicago from Dallas.

“When it Absolutely, Positively Has to Be There Overnight®,” FedEx Express has you covered. If it is Monday, and you need that iPad delivered from Dallas to Chicago by the end of the day on Tuesday, FedEx Standard Overnight® will be your choice. This service will cost as little as $67.33 to get your package there the very next day. What if you need it there in the morning? Choose FedEx Priority Overnight® for delivery from Dallas to Chicago by 10:30 AM the next morning for as little as $74.44. And if that iPad needs to be delivered in a matter of hours? It’s all good — choose FedEx First Overnight® for delivery by 9:30 AM in most metropolitan areas. For as little as $106.60 from Dallas to Chicago, it’s worth every penny because sometimes that can be a life saver.
