Printer-Friendly FedEx Adds New, Environmentally Friendly Technologies
If you’re looking for new ways to minimize your business’s impact on the environment, we have great news for you: FedEx now has the largest fleet of hybrid delivery trucks in North America. The new hybrid-electric trucks are just one of several ways FedEx has continued to invest in eco-friendly technology despite a challenging economy. Here are some highlights:
FedEx added 92 hybrid-electric trucks to our delivery fleet. This addition increases the FedEx fleet of hybrid-electric vehicles by more than 50 percent. The trucks also represent the first standard FedEx delivery trucks converted to hybrid-electric systems. The FedEx hybrid-electric fleet has logged more than 4 million miles of service since being introduced in 2004, reducing fuel use by 150,000 gallons and carbon dioxide emissions by 1,521 metric tons.
FedEx Ground plans to install the nation’s largest rooftop solar-electric system at the distribution hub in Woodbridge, N.J. The solar-electric project is the third collaboration between FedEx and BP Solar and the fifth such project for FedEx. The 2.42 megawatt solar-electric system will cover approximately 3.3 acres of rooftop space with approximately 12,400 solar panels. When completed, the system will be capable of producing a projected 2.6 million kilowatt hours of electricity a year and could provide up to 30 percent of the hub’s annual energy needs.
The Woodbridge hub will join other solar-electric FedEx hubs, including Oakland, Calif.; Whittier, Calif.; and Fontana, Calif. In 2010, FedEx also plans to open a state-of-the-art solar-electric hub in Cologne, Germany, that is expected to produce more than 1 megawatt (1,000 kilowatts) in power.
