FedEx Racing Team Finishes 20th at Dover
Denny Hamlin finished 20th in Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Dover International Raceway, the third race of the 2013 Chase won by Jimmie Johnson.
HHamlin started 18th in the #11 FedEx Freight Toyota after qualifying with a speed of 160.557 mph around the high banked "Monster Mile" and moved up two places right after the green flag fell. A caution for debris on lap 36 saw Denny pit for four tires, fuel and a track bar adjustment to fix a loose handling condition on entry into the corners.
After 80 laps Denny had moved up to 12th, maintaining that position through his first green flag pit stop at lap 110, when Crew Chief Darian Grubb called for two rounds of wedge in the left rear in addition to four tires and fuel. By midway through the 400 lap race Denny had moved up to 10th but on his final green flag pit stop of the day he was penalized for speeding on pit road, the result of his running out of fuel and not having a tachometer to judge his speed.
When the checkers flew Denny and the FedEx Freight Toyota Camry was still running strong in 20th despite being two laps down due to the penalty.
"We had a top ten finish in our sights until we ran out of fuel coming to the pits and I couldn't judge my speed on pit road," said Hamlin. "It's really a shame because my FedEx crew worked hard all weekend to make the car handle better, I just wish I could have given them the top ten finish they deserved."
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series returns to action on Sunday, October 6 at Kansas Speedway.
