Hamlin Finishes Season with 22nd Top-10 of 2016
Denny Hamlin finished ninth in Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway in the #11 FedEx Express Toyota, as Jimmie Johnson captured the checkered flag and the 2016 Chase championship trophy.
Hamlin lined up 14th for the final two-lap shootout and made up five spots by the finish line to record his career-best 22nd top-10 finish of the year.
"It was overall a great year for our FedEx team, and although we came up short of the title, we won three races and ran up front throughout the year," said Hamlin. "There is nothing to be discouraged about. This drives us to come back better next season and make another run at it."
Hamlin finished sixth in the final standings with three victories -- including the Daytona 500 -- and an 11.8 average finish, another career-best.
An early miscue on pit road where Hamlin missed his pit box on the first stop sent him to the back of the field from a fourth place starting position at Homestead. He worked his way back up through the field in the 267-lap event, which ended in thrilling fashion as Johnson outlasted Kyle Busch, Joey Logano and Carl Edwards for the title.
Drivers and teams will enjoy the offseason before returning to action with the 2017 Daytona 500 in late-February.
