Printer-Friendly Southern Heritage Classic presented by FedEx Express

Each year tens of thousands come to Memphis to experience the Southern Heritage Classic. Founded in 1990 by Fred Jones, the Southern Heritage Classic, featuring the football game between Jackson State University and Tennessee State University, has grown to become the premier sports and entertainment event in Memphis.

FedEx’s relationship with the Classic spans over 12 years, and as presenting sponsor of the game, it is now known as the Southern Heritage Classic presented by FedEx. Embracing diversity furthers the company’s success and solidifies relationships with its customers, suppliers and employees.

The Classic is held in September and plays host to more than 50,000 students and alumni from around the country. The Classic has evolved into much more than a spirited match-up on the gridiron. The week’s events include the coaches luncheon, a golf tournament, a parade, “battle of the bands”, music concerts, a cheerleading and dance competition, a fashion brunch and a spectacular tailgate celebration.

Still, the Classic is “all about the game,” as the week’s events boil to a fever pitch on Saturday night in a long-standing rivalry between two historically black colleges.

In addition to infusing the local economy with millions annually, the Southern Heritage Foundation, the event’s charitable arm, distributes thousands of dollars to nonprofit organizations each year.

Although it is built around an on-field rivalry, the Southern Heritage Classic connects kindred spirits – young and old – in celebration of the beauty of cultural diversity and the richness of Memphis’ heritage.
