2004 Press Releases
Kuala Lumpur, October 13, 2004 - FedEx Express (FedEx), the world's largest express transportation company, in conjunction with the American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM), saw its sponsored school, SMK Damansara Utama, win two awards at the recent AMCHAM Young Enterprise Programme Awards. The school took home honours as the winner of the Best Annual Report Award 2004 and 3rd runner up for the Best Product Award 2004.
DU-IT Enterprise of SMK Damansara Utama and sponsored by FedEx, was headed by Managing Director, Alvin Chia - a Form 4 student at the school, and accompanied by schoolmate and Company Secretary, Yoong Pui Shen. Chia said the group's approach to product development was very democratic, as all 29 members of the company contributed ideas. Said Chia, "Once we had a number of good ideas, we worked as group to develop the best ones into marketable products. It was a great experience and one that could never be replaced. I'm also glad we had help from FedEx to assist us, both financially and as advisors."
Pui Shen, who developed the award-winning annual report, was enthusiastic about the experience. Said Pui Shen, "I did a full product report on each of our products; how we manufactured them, marketed them and sold them and then showed our profits and losses. I was tempted to be really creative and add lots of graphics, but our advisor from FedEx explained the need for the report to be concise and professional. In the end, I learned a lot and really enjoyed the whole experience."
This is the second time that FedEx has sponsoring this school in the Young Enterprise Programme and Ms. Lily Tay, Managing Director of FedEx Malaysia, says the experience has been as rewarding for them as it has been for the students "FedEx is dedicated to our responsibilities in a wide range of fields including community involvement, the environment and corporate governance. Sponsoring SMK Damansara Utama in the Young Enterprise program gives a real benefit to both the students and the school."
"I was very impressed with the level of commitment the students demonstrated. Seeing the pride on their faces after receiving their rewards is what makes the whole experience worthwhile for me, and we look forward to continuing our support of programmes like Young Enterprise. We are very proud of their achievements." Continued Ms. Tay
The AMCHAM Young Enterprise Programme awards were introduced to recognise and encourage higher standards of excellence in the performance of the Young Enterprise companies. The Awards were divided into two categories: Best product and Best Annual Report. Winners received trophies and prize money for their efforts.
The event was attended by Charge d' Affaires, a.i., of the US Embassy in Malaysia, Mr. Robert Pollard, and representatives from FedEx Express Malaysia including Lily Tay, Managing Director of FedEx Malaysia, and Kenny Lee, Manager of Human Resources.
