What you need to know to ship lithium batteries?

Required Documents

  • Shipper's Declaration required.

  • Indicate as below in FedEx air waybill:

    • "Dangerous Goods as per associated Shippers Declaration" and "Cargo Aircraft Only".

Note:

  • Lithium ion cells or batteries must be offered for transport at a state of charge (SoC) not exceeding 30% of their rated capacity.

  • Lithium ion cells or batteries with a state of charge greater than 30% of their rated capacity may only be offered for transport, on cargo aircraft only, with the prior approval of the State of Origin and the State of the Operator under the written conditions established by those authorities.
     

Required Packaging and Labelling

  • UN specification packaging required as follows:

    Cells and/or Batteries must:
    • be completely enclosed in inner packagings then placed in UN Specification packaging that meets Packing Group II performance standards, then placed with the equipment in a strong rigid outer packaging (Figure 1); or
    • be completely enclosed in inner packagings then placed with equipment in UN Specification packaging that meets Packing Group II performance standards. (Figure 2)

    Note: A strong rigid outer package (Figure 1) need not bear a UN Specification Mark e.g. 4G/Y25.5/S/19/US/LM825
  • Class 9 Lithium Batteries or Sodium Ion Batteries Label (Figure 3) with a CAO Label (Figure 4) affixed on the same surface.

  • The number of cells in each package must not exceed the appropriate number for the equipment's operation plus two spare sets.

 

If net quantity of batteries per package is above 5kg and no more than 35kg:

1 China: Accepted on FedEx International Premium™ (IP1) and FedEx International Express Freight® (IXF) services only. Class 1-9 accepted to Shanghai (PVG) and Guangzhou (CAN), Class 2-9 accepted to Beijing (PEK), and Class 8-9 accepted to Shenzhen (SZX). Please attach completed paperwork including Shippers Declaration for Dangerous Goods (DGD), Dangerous Goods Acceptance Checklist, and air waybill copy.

2 Hong Kong: Accepted on FedEx International Priority® (IP), FedEx International Priority Freight® (IPF), FedEx International Economy® (IE) and FedEx International Economy Freight® (IEF) services only. Please note that economy dangerous goods service is only accepted from the US.

3 Indonesia: Only accept Class 9 dangerous goods from Jakarta (JKTA), Halim Perdanakusuma Airport (HLPA), Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGKA), Tunggul Wulung Airport (CXPA) and Batam (BTHA).

4 New Zealand: Accepted on FedEx International Priority® (IP) and FedEx International Priority Freight® (IPF) services only.

5 South Korea: Accepted on FedEx International Priority® (IP), FedEx International Priority Freight® (IPF), FedEx International Economy® (IE) and FedEx International Economy Freight® (IEF) services only. Please note that economy dangerous goods service is only accepted from the US.

6 ALASKA (USA):

  • Dangerous goods are prohibited to/from locations BRW and PUO in Anchorage, Alaska. This includes all Section II lithium battery shipments bearing the Lithium Battery Mark.

  • Dangerous goods are prohibited to/from locations Juneau (JNU), Ketchikan (KTN), and Sitka (SIT) however Section II lithium batteries bearing the Lithium Battery Mark without the CARGO AIRCRAFT ONLY label can be accepted to/from these locations.

HAWAII (USA): Dangerous goods are prohibited to/from the Kalaupapa area of the island of Molokai however Section II lithium batteries bearing the Lithium Battery Mark without the CARGO AIRCRAFT ONLY label can be accepted to/from these locations.

7 Vietnam: Accepted on FedEx International Priority Freight® (IPF) services only.

  • Accept on FedEx International Priority® (IP)/FedEx International Priority Freight® (IPF) Class 9 dangerous goods inbound and outbound to/from Ho Chi Minh City Airport (SGNA) and "D" cities of DADA only.

  • Accept on FedEx International Premium™ (IP1)/International Express Freight® (IXF) Classes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9 inbound to Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) and Hanoi (HAN) only.
