  • Scroll down through the topics and terms to locate a definition of the term you are seeking.

General Terms
The following are general terms used through FedEx Ship Manager ®. Any conflict between this information and that information which is included in the FedEx Service Guide is governed by the FedEx Service Guide.

A

Access Time
For FedEx Express Tags, Access Time is the minimum time needed for the courier to pick up the package. Access time varies by postal code (zip code); on average it can be 3 hours. Access time is the difference between the package ready time and business close time.

In Canada, you can also choose to add additional handling charges to your shipping charges and surcharges, minus Canadian taxes.

Add handling charge/Additional handling charge

Handling charges are added to the actual shipping charges by the shipper. These are not charges assessed by FedEx and are not paid to FedEx. Additional handling charges can be set up either as a fixed amount per shipment, or a designated percentage of the Courtesy rate quote amount that FedEx provides you.

If this billing option is used without prior authorization from the Recipient, then all charges will be billed to the shipper. For more information, please call 1.800.GoFedEx (1.800.463.3339).

If you decide to cancel a shipment, it must be done prior to tendering the package to FedEx. If the shipment has already been accepted by FedEx, you will need to notify your local FedEx office to arrange to have the shipment canceled and arrange the disposition of the shipment.

Courtesy Rate Quote
By using the Courtesy Rate Quote feature, you can find out how much it will cost to ship your package before you send it. For FedEx Express and FedEx Express Freight shipments, your quote is based on rates associated with your FedEx Account Number and will include any applicable discounts. For FedEx Ground ® shipments, the rate shown is a standard list rate.

Keep in mind that the rate you receive may be different than the actual charges for your shipment. Differences may occur based on actual weight, dimensions and other factors. Consult the applicable FedEx Service Guide for details on how shipping charges are calculated.

For more information, click on the Dangerous Goods link on the Options screen.

Date created
(For FedEx Return Shipments in the U.S. Only) When creating a return shipment, it may not always be possible to know the exact ship date for the return package. Thus the date created is the date when the return label/time or return service was requested. In the case that an outbound package and return package are processed together, this field will default to the ship date that was indicated for the accompanying outbound shipment. The ship date for a return package will be determined based on FedEx package scans.

Dimensional Weight
Dimensional weight is a calculation of the shipment's weight based on its volumetric standard instead of its actual weight. Dimensional weight is calculated by multiplying the length by width by height of each package in inches or centimeters and dividing by a dimensional weight divisor. The dimensional weight divisor varies by service offering and unit of measure (inches or centimeters).

For example, for domestic shipments measured in inches, the divisor is 194; but for U.S. export shipments measured in inches, the divisor is 166. For Canadian origin or international shipments measured in inches, the divisor is 166; if measured in centimeters, the divisor is 6,000. Contact your local FedEx Customer Service for more details.

Dimensions
Enter the length, width, and height of the package. Package dimensions must be at least 1 inch/cm for Length, 1 inch/cm for Width, 1 inch/cm for Height. For multiple piece shipments, you can ship up to 25 packages using 10 unique rows of weight/dimensions information.

Dimensions Profile
A dimensions profile contains the length, width, and height dimensions for any standard sized packaging that you intend to use repeatedly for your FedEx shipments. Within your FedEx Ship Manager account you can set up, name, and save up to 20 preset dimensions profiles that can be easily recalled when you start to create a shipment.

Display recipient ID field
Select this option to have the recipient ID field displayed on the main ship screen.

If you have a personal scale, you can populate the weight field automatically. To ensure accurate documentation of your FedEx shipment, your scale should be properly connected to the COM1 port of your computer and you must use Microsoft ® Internet Explorer 4.x (or above). Exposure to and risk of loss in excess of the declared value is assumed by the shipper.

The Warsaw Convention limits FedEx's liability for loss of or damage to your international shipment, unless you declare and pay the required fees. The interpretation of the Warsaw Convention's liability limits may vary depending on the destination country. If the Warsaw Convention, as amended by Montreal Protocol No. 4 applies to your shipment, FedEx's liability is limited to 17 Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) per kilo, unless you declare a higher value.

Otherwise and in instances where the Warsaw Convention, as amended, does not apply, FedEx's liability is limited in the U.S., as set forth in the Service Guide, to US $9.07 per pound ($20.38 per kilo) unless you declare a higher value. In Canada, FedEx's liability is limited in these instances to $100 CAD unless you declare a higher value.
