U.S. Postal Service Changes Affecting FedEx SmartPost® Customers by June 2013

The U.S. Postal Service® (USPS) has stated that its current package barcode format will be changed to a new Intelligent Mail® Package Barcode (IMpb) format that provides better end-to-end visibility and service performance. While the new format will have the same symbology as the current one, it will move from the limited intelligence to an enhanced intelligence that defines mail class, subclass and extra services within the barcode.

This change affects all FedEx SmartPost packages. We want to assure you that we have been planning for this change and are working on our IMpb solution. FedEx SmartPost is working directly with the USPS® to provide our customers with the needed time to prepare for this change.

We will continue to provide updates on the USPS IMpb final specifications and ensure that you receive a smooth and timely transition to the IMpb barcode. For further information, please review the IMpb Frequently Asked Questions document at fedex.com/us/smartpostguide/IMpb.html.

Please contact your account representative or email IMpb@fedex.com if you have additional questions or concerns.

FedEx Ground Introduces New Hazardous Materials Shipping Policies

Effective August 1, 2011, FedEx Ground® mandates all hazardous materials shippers to use FedEx or non-FedEx electronic shipping solution to:

  • Validate accuracy of FedEx Ground hazardous materials shipment information before printing the paperwork.
  • Generate Shipper’s Hazardous Materials Certification forms (OP-950) and Hazardous Materials Paper forms (OP-900LL or OP-900 LG).
  • Electronically upload FedEx Ground hazardous material shipment information to FedEx systems at the time of pickup by ensuring a successful end-of-day close routine has been executed.
FedEx Ground initiated this mandate to enhance the safety and efficiency of processing, managing, and transporting hazardous materials shipments. The new requirement will not only eliminate data entry errors caused by paper manifest information being re-keyed into the system, but it will also enable FedEx to easily provide accurate information to emergency responders, in case of an incident.

Click here to learn more about the new FedEx Ground hazardous materials shipping policy changes and for guidance on how to comply with the new requirements.

For additional information, go to fedex.com/us/service-guide/our-services/options/index.html or contact the FedEx Dangerous Goods/Hazardous Materials Hotline at 1.800.GoFedEx 1 800.463.3339 (say “dangerous goods” or press “81”).

Update for Shipping to Russia, South Africa, South Korea and Turkey

Effective Aug. 2, 2010, Russia, South Africa, South Korea and Turkey became FedEx postal code-supported countries. Shipments to these countries require a postal code as part of the shipping address to help minimize delays and route packages more efficiently to their destinations. This is a reminder that shippers now must enter a valid postal code or they will be unable to ship to these countries.

Contact your recipients for the postal code for shipments to these countries and update your shipping databases with the correct postal codes. To speed up your international shipping, enter the correct postal code for your package destination using the format noted below where N=number.

November 2009 - Employer Identification Number Replaces Social Security Number in Electronic Export Information Filings

The U.S. Bureau of the Census has amended the Foreign Trade Regulations to eliminate the reporting of a Social Security Number (SSN) as an identification number when filing Electronic Export Information (EEI) in the Automated Export System (AES).

Effective Dec. 2, 2009, AES will not accept an SSN as identification in an EEI filing and as of that date, shippers will be required to use an employer identification number (EIN). EINs are available to both businesses and individuals and can be obtained by registering with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) at http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=97860,00.html. Using this Web site, you can apply online or by telephone, facsimile (fax) or mail. Once you obtain your EIN, please update your records accordingly.

For more information about applying online, go to http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=102767,00.html. If you have any questions about EINs, please call the IRS at 1.800.829.4933.

If you have any questions about FedEx® electronic shipping solutions or want to ensure that you do not have SSNs mapped or defaulted through customization or integration, please call the FedEx Technical Support Center at 1.877.FDX Assist 1.877.339.2774.
August 2009 - FedEx implements specific information security standards. FedEx is committed to promoting a safe and secure environment in which to conduct business and deliver superior service to our customers. To that end, the company has implemented specific information security standards to prevent incidents which could affect a company’s ability to do business or undermine its reputation.

The scope of the information security standards is to reduce risk for FedEx and FedEx customers by protecting confidential information that is entrusted to FedEx, and its direct or indirect subsidiaries.

FedEx is extending these standards to further protect customer account numbers from unauthorized use. As part of this effort, FedEx is limiting the exposure of shipper account numbers on shipping labels. The safeguards outlined in this document provide direction to help customers avoid the inadvertent release of confidential account information and minimize risks to FedEx and our customers.

Go to the Customer Protection Center Web site at fedex.com/us/security/ to learn more about how FedEx works to help protect you and how you can protect yourself.

FedEx Ship Manager® Server

In a future release of FedEx Ship Manager® Server, the account number will always be masked and will not be an option for customers to turn on. Now, however, FedEx Ship Manager Server gives you the capability to hide or mask the account number within the Configuration Utility. Refer to the FedEx Ship Manager Server documentation for additional details on masking account numbers. If your customers use a version of FedEx Ship Manager Server software below 6.8, this capability does not exist and customers will need to upgrade to a more recent software version.

If your integrated solution supports custom labels and builds the label, you must make the change in your software, or provide information to your customers on how to mask the account number themselves. The instructions in the FedEx documentation will not work with the customer label feature.

If you need additional information, please call 1.800.GoFedEx 1.800.463.3339 or go to the FedEx Developer Resource Center at fedex.com/developer. Thank you for choosing FedEx. We appreciate your business and look forward to delivering the service you expect for all your shipments, large or small.
