Peak Surcharge

Peak Surcharge

FedEx implemented the Peak Surcharge on April 6, 2020 due to elevated volumes, high demand for capacity, and increased operating costs across our network.

To provide our customers with the best possible service during this time, beginning November 22, 2021, the surcharge amount for FedEx Express parcel and freight and TNT international parcel shipments originating from MEISA, destined for Australia and New Zealand will increase from $0.22/kg to $2.00/kg for parcel and freight.

The surcharge rate per kg will be applied as shown below:

Surcharge Amount (BWP per Kilo)

Origin Country Destination Country Rate / kg
Parcel Freight
Botswana US & Canada** 9 22.6
Australia & New Zealand* 22.6 22.6
Rest of the world 3 3

Effective Date: November 22, 2021

Parcel Min. Charge: BWP 11 / Shipment

Freight Min. Charge: BWP 534 / Shipment

* The surcharge change will impact other countries falling in the same zones as Australia and New Zealand.

** The surcharge will also apply to other countries in the same zone as US and Canada.

Minimum amount for parcel: $1 and minimum amount for freight: $50. Applicable Surcharge amount will be the higher of the per kg rate OR Minimum amount. The above mentioned rates are subject to exchange rate fluctuations. The surcharges in other countries remain unchanged.

Why is FedEx instituting a peak surcharge increase during a global health crisis?

The restrictions issued by various governments to contain the spread of COVID-19 are disrupting the global supply chain. Air cargo capacity is limited, and we’ve had to make adjustments so that our international networks can best deliver much-needed goods and services in this constrained environment.

How long will the surcharge remain in effect?

Until further notice. Market conditions are shifting rapidly because of COVID-19 and we will evaluate this surcharge on an ongoing basis.
