Healthcare Logistics In Action: How Hematogenix Built A Cancer Research Hub In APAC

By FedEx | March 31, 2026

Since the launch of its Cyberjaya hub in 2021, Hematogenix has brought its world-class oncology testing and clinical research capabilities closer to patients across APAC. Here’s how its expansion has driven more timely diagnoses and better patient outcomes, supported by FedEx’s healthcare logistics expertise.

  • Hematogenix, a US-founded global cancer research laboratory, set up its APAC hub in Malaysia to bring specialized oncology biomarker testing and clinical trial support closer to patients and clinicians in the region.
  • Since 2021, the facility in Cyberjaya has processed almost 30,000 samples and serves hospitals across multiple APAC markets.
  • FedEx supports Hematogenix through healthcare cold-chain logistics that moves temperature-sensitive specimens across borders, providing regional customs and regulatory guidance to ensure compliance and reduce delays.

For cancer patients, time is never a luxury. From the moment a specimen is collected, it enters a race to preserve its viability – across borders, through customs, against the clock. Ultra-sensitive specimens need to be routed through a dedicated green lane, clearing customs and bypassing standard delays to keep the window between collection and diagnosis as short as possible.

Hematogenix was built around this urgency. Founded in the US in 2007, the company specializes in oncology, running cancer biomarker diagnostic tests and supporting pharmaceutical clinical trials worldwide. After nearly two decades at the forefront of cancer-focused biomedical research and reference laboratory science, the company expanded into Asia Pacific (APAC). Its APAC hub in Cyberjaya, Malaysia began full operations in June 2021.

The choice of location was strategic. Cyberjaya's growing life sciences ecosystem, Malaysia's central position within the region, and a strong local talent pool made it an ideal base to serve oncology needs across APAC. Services that were previously outsourced to laboratories outside the region could now be performed locally, closer to the patients and clinicians who need them most.

Since its launch, the Cyberjaya facility has processed almost 30,000 samples and serves hospitals across multiple markets, contributing directly to Hematogenix's broader global network.

Building a world-class lab from the ground up

Running a lab that meets global standards is a demanding undertaking. Doing it in a facility that is only a few years old, in a market where life sciences infrastructure is still developing, requires an even more deliberate approach.

That responsibility belongs to Dr Khairul Faizi Khalid, who oversees Hematogenix’s APAC operations from the Cyberjaya site. For Dr Khairul, the benchmark was global from the outset.

“Our priority from day one has been making sure the work coming out of this lab maintains the same high quality and standards as that of our US facility and other Hematogenix global locations,” Dr Khairul shares. “That means investing heavily in training, building up local expertise, and holding every process to the same accreditation standards – regardless of where the sample originates.”

Under his oversight, the Malaysia team is equipped to handle the full range of Hematogenix's oncology biomarker testing capabilities. Whether a specimen arrives from a local clinic or crosses multiple borders to reach the lab, diagnostic standards remain consistent.

When healthcare logistics is part of the science

In cancer diagnostics and clinical research, the time between collecting a specimen and delivering results directly affects patient outcomes. Faster turnaround enables quicker treatment decisions, reduces sample degradation, shortens trial timelines, and critically, reduces the need to resample patients – an experience that is both distressing and costly.

For a laboratory handling highly sensitive biological specimens, healthcare logistics is more than a back-office function. It’s integral to the science itself.

Oncology samples frequently require strict cold-chain management to maintain precise temperatures from the moment a specimen leaves a clinic until it reaches the lab bench. A delay or temperature deviation can render a sample entirely unusable, with direct consequences for patients and clinical trial timelines.

Hematogenix works with FedEx to manage its cross-border specimen shipments across APAC using FedEx Clinical Care – a solution purpose-built for the temperature-sensitive, time-critical demands of clinical trial logistics.

FedEx’s healthcare logistics expertise, ability to navigate complex customs regulations for biological specimen shipping, and consistent transit times help ensure that time-sensitive samples arrive intact and within specification.

Before Hematogenix established its APAC operations, patient specimens from the region had to travel all the way to its US facility – a journey that resulted in turnaround times of 48 to 72 hours. With the Cyberjaya hub, transit times are significantly shorter: door-to-door transit from Japan, for example, can now be completed in as little as 17 hours.

Faster transit means better sample viability. This also allows oncologists to receive diagnostic results sooner and make more timely and informed treatment decisions for their patients.

With FedEx's support, Hematogenix's scientific team can focus entirely on diagnostics and research, confident that the transport of specimens across more than 220 countries and territories is in experienced hands.

“Having a logistics partner that understands the regulatory complexity of biological specimen shipping across borders means we can focus on what we do best – the science,” said Dr Khairul.

What other business owners can learn from Hematogenix

Hematogenix’s growth in Malaysia offers a compelling example for specialized businesses looking to scale regionally, particularly in sectors where expertise, regulatory compliance, and infrastructure are non-negotiable.

Rather than building a general-purpose laboratory, Hematogenix concentrated its entire operation around oncology. That focus has made it a trusted partner for pharmaceutical companies and hospitals undertaking high-stakes diagnostic work. In this case, depth of specialization becomes a clear competitive advantage.

Scaling regionally also did not require building every piece of infrastructure independently. By combining deep scientific expertise with established logistics and compliance partners, Hematogenix extended its cross-border capabilities without the cost of replicating an entire supply chain from scratch.

Finally, by equipping the Cyberjaya team to operate at the same accreditation standards as the US facility, Hematogenix has kept high-level oncology expertise close to the markets that need it – reducing turnaround times and making advanced cancer diagnostics more accessible across APAC.

Improving patient outcomes in APAC

For Hematogenix, the Cyberjaya facility represents an investment in the future of oncological research. As APAC becomes an increasingly important center for clinical trials and cancer diagnostics, having world-class laboratory capabilities in the region means faster results for more patients and greater progress in biomedical research.

Hematogenix plans to continue investing in local talent and deepening cross-border collaboration to improve patient outcomes across the region. With FedEx managing the critical healthcare logistics infrastructure required to transport specimens safely and on time, Hematogenix can pursue its mission knowing that the integrity of its scientific work will not be compromised in transit.
