Customs clearance is the process by which authorities review your international shipment to ensure applicable duties and taxes have been calculated and paid, and that the goods are legally cleared to enter the US. Getting it right means fewer delays and a smoother experience for your recipients.

The basic steps:

  1. Prepare your documentation: The minimum required documents for US-bound shipments include a commercial invoice, air waybill, and packing list. Some goods require additional documents, such as a Certificate of Origin or an import license.

  2. Classify your goods: Identify and assign the correct HTS code to each item to determine the applicable customs duties.

  3. Accurately declare item value and origin: State the true value of goods and the country where they were manufactured (not where they were shipped from).

  4. Submit documentation electronically. Use FedEx Electronic Trade Documents within FedEx Ship Manager™ to submit paperwork for your shipment.

  5. Pay duties and fees. Duties, the MPF, and any other applicable CBP fees are collected as part of the clearance process.
