More about temperature-controlled shipping
The cost of FedEx® Temp-Assure Advantage is made up of box rental plus transportation.
Box rental depends on the size required:
- Small - 11 litres
- Medium - 23 litres
- Large - 43 litres
Transportation is charged separately for each of three legs:
- Leg 1 brings the pre-conditioned box to you from our fulfilment centre at Paris-Charles De Gaulle (CDG) airport (based on your personal FedEx rates).
- Leg 2 delivers the box with your goods to its destination (based on your personal FedEx rates).
- Leg 3 returns the empty box to the fulfilment centre.
|
When booking the Leg 2 outbound shipment, make sure you also book the return shipment of the empty box at the same time. To create a return label in FedEx Ship Manager, check the "Include a return label" box in the shipment form. Box return address: Envirotainer c/o FedEx FTAA |
First, select the temperature range: Frozen (-25ºC to -15ºC), Refrigerated (2ºC to 8ºC) or Controlled Room Temperature (15ºC to 25ºC). Then, choose the size you require: Small (11 litres), Medium (23 litres) or Large (43 litres). Finally, verify that your goods do not exceed the inner dimensions of the selected box.
Each box has a unique ID number, which is recorded in your shipment details.
FedEx® Temp-Assure Advantage boxes consist of three layers:
- Protective shell (twin-wall sheet)
- Vacuum insulation panels
- Inner cooling elements (phase-change material)
To guarantee temperature stability for at least 96 hours, phase-change materials (including latent heat-storage material) absorb heat during melting and release it again during freezing. As a result, the required temperature can be maintained for the duration of transport. Heat or cold entering the box is absorbed by the materials during melting and freezing.
Vacuum insulation combined with phase-change materials allows one configuration for the packaging for all seasons and climates. Inner cooling elements are color-coded for each temperature range to avoid any possible confusion.
Yes. FedEx® Temp-Assure Advantage packaging is designed and validated to meet ISTA 7D temperature standards and is tested according to ISTA-6-FedEx-A physical performance requirements.
When a box is returned to our fulfilment centre, quality checks are performed, including component repair/replacement if damage is observed. Strict cleaning procedures are in place to ensure there’s no cross-contamination between uses. These include a quarantine process, if a box appears to be contaminated, or if interior packaging components are damaged.
If a box is returned for refurbishment and items are found inside, the incident is reported, and the packaging is quarantined for further inspection.
Boxes should be ordered at least 3 days in advance to ensure they arrive in time for your shipment.
The customer/sender should book the empty box return at the same time as booking the outbound shipment to the receiver. The standard International Economy rates apply to the return shipment. Please note that for box returns booked by the receiver, FedEx third-party rates apply.
There are two options. Either the sender of the box schedules a return collection on FedEx.com (Schedule a Pickup). Or the receiver books the return collection in FedEx.com (Dropoff), using the tracking number on the pre-printed return label.
Phase-change materials (PCM) in the box do not rely on external temperature control during transport in e.g. temperature-controlled vehicles or storage areas, so your shipment can travel anywhere, anytime.
Closed-loop operations mean your shipment travels exclusively within the FedEx network. This gives us complete control and reduces the risk of loss or theft.
Contingency planning makes us ready to respond to unexpected delays with backup plans at every stage.
Temperature-controlled storage at FedEx facilities, wherever possible, ensures product integrity during unforeseen emergencies.
FedEx® Temp-Assure Advantage boxes are temperature-stable for at least 96 hours, so end-to-end transport must be completed within 4 days. In the event of unexpected delays, your shipment can be put into ‘hibernation mode’ in our temperature-controlled storage facilities. This pauses the clock on the 96 hours of transit time. Boxes sent out for last-mile delivery have a minimum of 24 hours of temperature stability remaining.
Approval is required before you can send shipments containing Dangerous Goods. If you need to ship Dangerous Goods, you can indicate this when registering for FedEx® Temp-Assure Advantage to start the approval process.
