What should you pay attention to if you want to ship a package to China?

The laws and regulations are different in each country, but as a starting point, you can check the following things before shipping a package to China:

  • FedEx won’t ship items prohibited by the Chinese government. Have a look at our global shipping restrictions and prohibited items here.
  • China has many import regulations, including on consumer goods, wooden packaging and even certain types of media. These must be considered when shipping from the Netherlands to China as they require additional documentation, licensing and certification.
  • Find the Harmonised System (HS) code for your parcel and establish whether it requires the China Compulsory Certification (CCC) Mark. The International Shipping Assist tool can help you establish the HS code.

  • In China, customs clearance varies depending on the nature and value of the items being shipped. Express clearance is available for documents, personal items, gifts, online purchases, and items without commercial value. However, formal clearance is required for regulated items or those exceeding 5,000 CNY in value. For formal clearance, receivers may need a Customs Registration number, an Import and Export Business License, and other necessary licenses. Our customs tools can help you estimate import costs and submit your commercial invoice with  FedEx® Electronic Trade Documents to successfully send a parcel to China.
  • To prevent clearance delays, it's essential to add a complete description and accurately declare your package's full value in your documentation. Consistency in shipping information across all documents is crucial, as discrepancies may prompt further examination, prolonging the clearance process. Read more about avoiding delays at customs.

What documents do you need to send a package to China?

Express clearance:

  • Commercial Invoice - This is a standard when it comes to international shipping and includes key shipment details. We have a template and more detailed guidance for commercial invoices here.
  • Air Waybill - A FedEx International Air Waybill number is generated when you create a shipment and serves as a contract between you and FedEx.
  • Proof of purchase - This only applies to online transactions.
  • Packing list - For multiple items.
  • Receiver’s ID or passport - Only for personal articles and gifts.

Formal clearance:

  • Sales contract or proof of the agreed price.
  • Declaration of conformity - For items requiring a CCC Mark.
  • Information bundle - When shipping complex products.
