FedEx Expands Healthcare Shipping Portfolio with New Cold Shipping Package Option

FedEx has expanded its temperature controlled packaging (TCP) portfolio to include a new “cold shipping” packaging option for customers that require a refrigerated environment of 2-8° Celsius up to 96 hours for their shipments.

The new packaging is currently available in 13 markets across the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, and will be of particular benefit to the healthcare industry, as it is easy to use, reliable, cost-effective and environmentally-friendly.

The patented system, built by NanoCool, achieves a temperature of 2-8°C in less than five minutes without the use of gel packs or dry ice. The packaging device maintains its exacting “cold ship” temperature requirements with a special cooling system that evaporates water over time, a process that is activated by merely pushing the button inside the box.

FedEx not only delivers a reliable, cost-effective method to transport temperature-sensitive shipments, it provides these services with easy use for customers. The convenient benefits of the system include:

  • Reliable maintenance of a 2-8°C environment for up to 96 hours from activation without gel packs or dry ice
  • Simple, easy-to-use product with no refrigeration, frozen preparation or “pre-conditioning” steps required
  • Smaller, lighter packaging that weighs less than half of some gel-pack systems
  • No complex assembly needed; the package arrives ready for use
  • Packaging that’s easier to dispose of than gel packs and produces less packaging waste
  • Regulatory compliance for both infectious substances (UN3373 only) and non-infectious clinical samples

The packaging, which can also be used in combination with FedEx Priority Alert™ services, is part of the broad portfolio of FedEx healthcare solutions designed to meet even the most sensitive shipping needs of FedEx customers.

Trial Paperless Clearance in Eastern and Northern China

Paperless customs clearance will be implemented in China in 2014. In order to ensure a smooth transition, China Customs in Beijing and Shanghai officially launched a pilot on paperless customs clearance in which FedEx is participating. FedEx in Beijing now offers paperless customs clearance for import and export shipments, which require formal customs declaration in northern China. FedEx in Shanghai offers paperless customs clearance for import shipments, which require formal customs declaration into eastern China.

During the trial period, companies which have good credit standing and fall within the A/AA/B categories, can apply for paperless clearance for shipments,* which require formal customs declaration.

Benefits of paperless clearance are as follows:

  • You can transmit electronic documents directly in PDF format to your customs clearance broker.
  • Since hardcopy customs documentation will no longer be required, paper usage is reduced, promoting a low-carbon environment.
  • You can pick up or send shipments by submitting the electronic release information or Clearance Paperless Inspection/Release Notification Letter without having the customs stamps required for release when submitting paper documents.
  • The fully automated system simplifies the clearance procedures and reduces clearance costs for low risk shipments, resulting in greater efficiency.
  • Companies using paperless clearance will be in a better position to be upgraded to the AA category and enjoy more clearance privileges.

Business users can log onto the following websites for further instructions on the electronic declaration authorization system:

Packaging Tips for Lithium Battery Shipments

At FedEx, we understand the importance of ensuring the safe transport of your shipment. Lithium battery shipments or shipments with items that contain lithium batteries may overheat and ignite in certain conditions and, once ignited, maybe difficult to extinguish. Therefore, we would like to remind you of the regulations and correct handling procedures to ensure the safety of your packages and those who handle the shipment.

FedEx strictly adheres to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regulations. As such, FedEx has compiled a set of guidelines that govern packing, marking and labeling of shipments of lithium batteries and items that contain charged batteries.

Shipments containing lithium batteries must follow the specific packaging guidelines below:

  • Batteries are to be packed individually.
  • Batteries must be shielded and protected to prevent short circuits.
  • Batteries are completely enclosed.
  • Items for shipment must be placed in a sturdy outer container.
  • Labeling and documentation needs to be checked for accuracy.
  • Packaging must meet the requirements of each test in the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, Part III, subsection 38.3. Please refer to the following link to get the latest update of such requirements. http://www.unece.org/fileadmin/DAM/trans/danger/publi/manual/Rev5_Amend1/ST-SG-AC10-11-Rev5-Amend1e.pdf.

In addition, as lithium batteries, both lithium ion and lithium metal, are fully regulated dangerous goods, it is important that the shipment is correctly identified, classified, packaged, marked and labeled. A Shipper’s Declaration for Dangerous Goods must also be completed and signed by a trained shipper.

FedEx will not accept shipments of any electronic product that includes recalled or defective lithium batteries, such as laptop computers.
