What is Full Truckload (FTL)?

Full truckload (FTL) meaning

Full truckload (FTL) is refers to shipping where a single shipment occupies an entire truck, reserved exclusively for one shipper’s goods.

These shipments of dedicated truckload freight typically move directly from their origin to their destination without extra stops or transfers. That means FTL transport is often faster because there’s no need to pick up or drop off other goods along the way.

What is the difference between full truckload shipping and less than truckload shipping (FTL vs LTL)?

There are several key differences between FTL or LTL shipping :

  • Shipment size and space: FTL logistics uses the entire truckload for your shipment alone, which means your goods won’t be combined with others. With LTL shipping, multiple smaller shipments typically share the same truck, so you only pay for the space you use.

  • Speed and transit time: With FTL transport, your shipment may move directly to its destination without stops, which usually means faster delivery. LTL shipments may take longer because they often stop for consolidating and dropping off other freight.

  • Handling: Full truckload freight usually stays on the same truck the whole way, so there may be less handling involved which reduces the risk of damage or loss. LTL freight may be handled more at hubs or during transfers.

  • Cost considerations: Full truckload shipping can be more cost-efficient when you can fill the whole truck. However, LTL may still be cost-effective for smaller shipments because you share costs with other shippers.

When should you use full truckload shipping (FTL)?

You might consider using full truckload services in some of these situations:

  • Your shipment fills or nearly fills an entire truck, which may help you get the best delivery cost per unit.

  • You need fast transit times with a direct route and no extra stops.

  • You’re shipping fragile, high-value, or sensitive goods and wish to limit handling.

  • You need more control over the shipment. For example, an FTL service may be ideal if you are planning multi-stop deliveries, or if you use special equipment for loading or unloading which requires a specific truck type.

  • You want to reduce the risk of damage or loss since FTL freight typically stays on the same truck the whole trip.

FTL or LTL typically applies to ground road transport. If you need urgent or flexible delivery for high-value goods, FedEx offers cost-effective freight services
