Packaging Basics

At FedEx, our objective is to get your shipment safely to its destination in the same condition it was sent. The next time you ship with FedEx Express® or FedEx Ground® services, you can do your part by reviewing our packaging tips on how to pack a box and following our guidelines. If you need help packaging your shipment or want to purchase supplies, stop by your local FedEx Office Print & Ship Centre™. Find a location.

Follow the Basics

  1. CUSHION IT
Choose cushioning of appropriate density and thickness, and use enough to fill all void spaces in your shipping container.
  3. SEAL IT
Apply at least three strips of packaging tape to the top and bottom sides of the container using the H taping method.
  2. BOX IT
Select an appropriate container that is large enough to accommodate the proper thickness of cushioning material.
  4. LABEL IT
Place the shipping label with the recipient's full address on the most visible side of the container away from any folds or seams.

Cushioning Guidelines

Cushioning Guidelines
  • Use fillers like crumpled newspaper, loosefill peanuts or air-cellular cushioning material, such as Bubble Wrap®, to fill void spaces and prevent movement inside the box during shipping.
  • Wrap individual items with cushioning material and position them away from other items and the sides, corners, top and bottom of the outer container.
  • Wrap fragile items individually with a minimum 3" (8-cm) thickness of air-cellular cushioning material.
  • Wrap individual items, as a general rule, with at least a 2" (5-cm) thickness of air-cellular cushioning or foam material so items fit snugly inside an inside box or corrugated outer container.
  • For items that cannot be packaged in a container, pad and cover any pointed and sharp edges with corrugated boards, adequate foam, or air-cellular cushioning material, and tape securely.

Boxing Guidelines

  • Place items that might be damaged by normal handling, such as soiling, marking or application of adhesive labels, in a protective outer box.
  • Ship nonfragile products like soft goods inside a sturdy outer box.
  • Pack chipboard boxes, such as gift or shoe boxes, in a corrugated outer box.
  • Consolidate small parts or spillable granular products in a strong sealed container, such as burlap or a sift-proof plastic bag, before packaging in a sturdy outer box.
  • Use only outer boxes in good condition with intact flaps.
  • Use double-wall boxes for heavier items.
  • Make sure there are no holes, tears or corner dents in the outer box.

Sealing Guidelines

Sealing Guidelines
  • Use pressure-sensitive plastic tape, water-activated paper tape (minimum 60-lb. grade) or water-activated reinforced tape that is at least 2" (5 cm) wide.

Labelling Guidelines

Labelling Guidelines
  • Place delivery information inside and outside the package, including an address for your recipient and for yourself.
  • Do not list a P.O. box address for U.S. recipients. FedEx Express can ship to a P.O. box in certain international locations, including Puerto Rico, but you must provide a valid telephone, fax or telex number.
  • Remove or cross out any old address labels on the outer box.
  • Place package labels and packing slips facing the same direction on the same side of the package.
  • Avoid wrapping labels around a corner or directly on an edge or seam of the package.
  • Place shipping labels on the package's largest surface. While we cannot ensure compliance with markings such as "Up" arrows or "This End Up," properly placing the shipping label increases your chance for the preferred orientation.
