FedEx® Sustainability Insights (FSI) features
The FSI analytics dashboard makes complex carbon emissions data relating to your FedEx shipping easier to understand through clear visual insights. A variety of charts and breakdowns can help you identify trends and patterns quickly. Data can be viewed at the account level or drilled down to the package level for added detail. All insights are presented on one consolidated page to support informed decision-making around Scope 3 emissions from your FedEx transportation services. See the ‘Methodology’ FAQ section for a definition of Scope 3 emissions.
With FSI you can create emission reports in an instant with the CO2e emissions reporting feature. Customize your reports with advanced filtering using a wide range of parameters including location (country, region or territory), transportation mode, weight, origin/destination pairs, service type, EANs, tracking numbers, and more. You can also run multiple reports at the same time, reuse report templates with new data or compare historical reports to track progress over time.
Forecast your future shipping emissions with FSI using predictive modeling in the dashboard. Forecast charts combine route details, package information and FedEx service type to provide estimated carbon emissions to help you understand the possible environmental impact of your future FedEx shipments. Predictions are powered by FedEx’s extensive network data.
In the FSI dashboard you can create custom, account-level carbon emission targets to support your emission reduction strategies. Set a reduction percentage and define a target timeframe, then track progress and test different recommendations to help you identify your options to stay on track. With the goal tool you can toggle between service-level and distribution-level changes to see how those adjustments may affect your carbon emission output.
FSI offers two APIs which you can use to integrate historical or predictive carbon emissions data relating to your FedEx shipments directly into your supply chain or e-commerce systems for easy access in your current internal tools. With the Control Tower API you can display shipping emission data directly in your own internal dashboard or control tower. You can also use the Shopping Cart API to target your eco-conscious customers by showing them the estimated environmental impact of a shipping decision directly in their online shopping cart.
The CO2e emissions calculation methodology of FSI is third-party verified to be consistent with international industry standards found in the Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC) Framework and the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol.
Frequently asked questions
As a global citizen, FedEx has set a goal to achieve carbon-neutral operations globally by 2040 and is working to make supply chains smarter and more sustainable.
FedEx Sustainability Insights, or FSI, is a cloud-based tool that estimates emissions at a package and account level using FedEx scan data across our network and facilities, among other inputs.
FSI is available for all FedEx customers globally for almost all package shipments. Some exclusions do apply. Emissions reports can be downloaded to Excel with a list of all shipments included.
FSI is available as a paid subscription, giving you access to the dashboard interface and all main features: granular emissions analytics, customizable reports, predictive emissions forecasting, actionable reduction goals with route optimization insights, and optional APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) for website and app integration.
The APIs are currently available for customers in the U.S. only.
A limited version of FSI is also available, which gives you free access to CO2e emissions reporting for your FedEx shipping.
The FSI methodology is consistent with the Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC) Framework. The GLEC Framework was designed to calculate greenhouse gas emissions across a variety of transportation modes. It calculates well-to-wheel CO2e (including carbon (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O)) emissions for each individual package, which includes both transport and non-transport emissions.
Transport emissions include aircraft, truck, rail, and ocean* and are calculated for each transport segment between the origin and destination. FedEx data systems identify each stop a package makes and the mode of transport by which the package moves between each stop. Non-transport emissions are associated with energy use and mobile equipment (e.g., cargo tugs, forklifts, etc.) at facilities and are allocated to packages based on package weight.
*FSI includes ocean freight shipments operated by FedEx or its carrier services. Shipments handled through the FedEx Logistics (FXL) network or forward bookings are excluded from FSI.
GLEC stands for Global Logistics Emissions Council. It’s a partnership of more than 150 companies, organizations, and experts. They have developed a universal framework for calculating and reporting logistics emissions.
The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol establishes global standardized frameworks to measure emissions. It provides guidance for businesses and governments to help them reduce climate-warming emissions.
- Well-To-Wheel (WTW) refers to life cycle emissions associated with the extraction, production, transport, distribution, and use of fuel in an asset (i.e., aircraft, truck, train).
- Well-To-Tank (WTT) emissions are a subset of WTW and refers to emissions associated with the extraction, production, transport, distribution of the fuel into the tank of the asset. (Included in Scope 3).
- Tank-To-Wheel (TTW) emissions are a subset of WTW and refers to emissions associated with the fuel energy use from assets tank to combustion. Examples include tailpipe emissions from FedEx owned equipment and contracted transportation.
Definitions for Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions are provided in the Greenhouse Gas Protocol international standard and differentiated by how much control an organization has over the source of emissions. Use the Scope explanations below for the FSI report.
- Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions from owned or controlled sources. They include emissions from fuel used in company aircraft, vehicles, emergency generators, and natural gas heaters.
- Scope 2 emissions are indirect emissions from the production of purchased electricity. These emissions are produced at the power plant that generates the electricity used at FedEx facilities.
- Scope 3 emissions are other indirect emissions that FedEx has no direct control over. They include tailpipe emissions from contracted transportation, and emissions produced in the extraction, processing and transportation of fuels used.
FedEx customers can assimilate FedEx emissions reporting under their Scope 3 reporting.
Carbon dioxide equivalent or CO2e is a measure of the warming potential of greenhouse gases and allows a single value to represent the global warming potential (GWP) of multiple gases. In this report, the gases represented by ‘CO2e’ are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O).
A ton-mile is a transportation measurement that describes one ton of freight carried one mile (or one kilogram of freight carried one kilometer).
Customers who have signed the applicable subscription agreement to access FedEx Sustainability Insights via the dashboard can log in and view their CO2e emissions reporting using the external user interface.
The customer must be associated with the ‘payor’ account when access to the portal is granted.
Some exclusions apply. Emissions reports can be downloaded to Excel with a list of all shipments included.
Please contact your FedEx Sales representative for more information.
