Printer-Friendly FedEx SmartPost® Service Helps ThinkFastToys.com Maintain Its Free Shipping Threshold
Here’s how one online retailer uses FedEx SmartPost service to keep its transportation costs down, enabling it to continue providing free shipping to its customers.
knows toys. For more than 20 years, the company has been known for staying ahead of the curve in identifying industry trends, offering customers and their children the toys they’re looking for at a great price.
The company is also known for its commitment to cost-effective, hassle-free shipping. For orders of $79.99 or more, ThinkFastToys.com offers free shipping, and FedEx SmartPost service is a primary reason the company can keep providing this offer to their customers.
"Customers are savvy, and price is a huge differentiator. In order to stay competitive, we have to carefully manage shipping costs. FedEx SmartPost lets us do that, and pass the savings on to our customers," says Stu Eisenman, owner and co-founder with William Spraul.
An ideal solution
Prior to the fall of 2009, ThinkFastToys.com didn’t offer FedEx®
shipping. Like many businesses, the company figured that while its nearly 20-year relationship with UPS wasn’t perfect — especially when it came to custom integration assistance ― it was safe and familiar. However, after FedEx Account Executive David Freese clearly and skillfully presented the features and benefits of FedEx services versus those offered by UPS — including FedEx SmartPost service — Eisenman and Spraul committed to shipping via FedEx Express®
, FedEx Home Delivery®
and FedEx SmartPost for all low-weight, residential ground packages.
For online retailers like ThinkFastToys.com that are looking for an efficient, cost-effective means of shipping low-weight, non-urgent packages to their customers’ residences, FedEx SmartPost is an ideal solution.
With peak holiday season quickly approaching, the switch to FedEx became a critical, time-sensitive transition: FedEx shipping, tracking and rating functionality had to be integrated with ThinkFastToys.com’s business systems in time for the holiday rush. FedEx Customer Technology Consultant Kurt Peterson worked quickly and tirelessly to determine and install just the right mix of technology solutions.
Thanks to the integration, ThinkFastToys.com can quickly and automatically provide FedEx SmartPost, FedEx Home Delivery and FedEx Express tracking numbers directly to customers, providing an added level of convenience and service.
Keeping costs low
By utilizing the United States Postal Service®
(USPS) for final delivery, FedEx SmartPost reaches every U.S. address, including P.O. boxes and military APO and FPO destinations, as well as Alaska, Hawaii and all U.S. territories. Plus, FedEx SmartPost offers standard Saturday delivery, without residential or Saturday delivery surcharges.
Saturday delivery, which is also standard for FedEx Home Delivery, "is a nice surprise for our customers, who aren’t expecting deliveries on Saturday," says Eisenman.
Today, ThinkFastToys.com ships approximately 60 percent of its shipments via FedEx SmartPost and FedEx Home Delivery. "FedEx SmartPost has enabled us to remain competitive in a very price-sensitive industry," says Eisenman. "It lets us keep our free shipping threshold low while others in the industry have had to raise theirs."
