Downloading/Installing Zebra Printer Drivers


Depending on the type of thermal printer you have and the port you are using, you can choose to download and install the appropriate Zebra printer driver for your own computer.  If you have a replacement printer, you must uninstall the old printer driver first and then install the new one. Choose the appropriate procedure that corresponds to your operating system and port.

Remove Legacy Zebra Printer Driver

If you have previously installed a printer and are upgrading to one of the new ZPL printers, you first need to remove the legacy printer driver. To determine if you have a legacy printer driver on your system and install the correct printer driver, follow these steps:

  1. ® Windows® 2000, select Start > Settings> Printers. For Microsoft® Windows® XP, select Start > Settings > Printers and Faxes. The Printers and Faxes screen displays.
  2. Choose Server Properties from the File drop-down menu at the top of the screen. The Print Server Properties screen displays.
  3. Click the Drivers tab on the Print Server Properties screen.
  4. If the resulting screen displays any Eltron or Zebra printers for the Windows NT 4.0 or 2000 version, continue with the following steps to remove the legacy printer driver(s).
    Note: If the window does not display any Eltron or Zebra printers for the Windows NT 4.0 or 2000 version, go the Download/Install Zebra Printer Driver (USB or Parallel Port) or Download/Install Zebra Printer Driver (Serial Port) to download/install the appropriate printer driver.
  5. Click Remove Legacy Zebra Printer Driver. The Driver Uninstaller screen displays.
  6. Follow the instructions/prompts to uninstall your legacy Zebra printer driver.
  7. If a legacy printer is connected to your system, remove the printer, printer cable, and power cord.
  8. Download and install the current Zebra printer driver using the Download/Install Zebra Printer Driver (USB or Parallel Port) or Download/Install Zebra Printer Driver (Serial Port) instructions below for the type of port you are using.


Download/Install Zebra Printer Driver (USB or Parallel Port) for Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows XP

To download and install the current Zebra printer driver using the USB or parallel port for Microsoft® Windows® 2000 or Microsoft® Windows® XP systems, follow these steps:


  1. Click Download Zebra Printer Driver. When the File Download screen displays, click Save and save the driver folder to your desktop (or another directory of your choice).
  2. Double-click the driver folder to unzip the folder.
  3. Connect the USB or parallel cable to the printer and your system.
  4. Connect the power cord and power up the printer.
  5. When the New Hardware Wizard displays, select No, not this time.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced).
  8. Click Next.
  9. Select the Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install option.
  10. Click Next. The system may prompt you for the Hardware Type. If so, scroll down and select Printers and then click Next. If not, skip this next step.
  11. On the Add Printer Wizard screen, select Have Disk.
  12. Click Browse. Then select the directory where the driver files are located (e.g., your desktop or the directory you chose in step 1), and select the ZSD.INF (or ZSD) file. Click Open to continue.
  13. On the Install from Disk screen, click OK.
  14. Select the appropriate printer (e.g., Zebra ZP 500 (ZPL), Zebra LP2844ps, Zebra Z4Mplus (ZPL)).
  15. Click Next. A Hardware Installation screen may appear indicating that the driver has not passed Windows® Logo testing. If so, select Continue Anyway.
  16. Click Finish to complete the installation.

Download/Install Zebra Printer Driver (Serial Port) for Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows XP

To download and install the current Zebra printer driver using the serial port for Microsoft® Windows® 2000 or Microsoft® Windows® XP systems, follow these steps:

  1. Click Download Zebra Printer Driver. When the File Download screen displays, click Save and save it to your desktop (or another directory of your choice).
  2. Double-click the driver folder to unzip the folder.
  3. Connect the cable to the printer and your system.
  4. Connect the power cord and power up the printer.
  5. For Microsoft® Windows® 2000, select Start > Settings > Printers. For Microsoft® Windows® XP, select Start > Settings > Printers and Faxes.
  6. Click Add a Printer. The Add Printer Wizard screen displays.
  7. Click Next to continue.
  8. For Microsoft® Windows® 2000, select Local printer and click Next. For Microsoft® Windows® XP, select Local printer attached to this computer and click Next.
    Note: Do not select Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer.
  9. Select Use the following port. Choose the appropriate port from the drop-down menu.
  10. Click Next. The Add Printer Wizard screen displays.
  11. Select Have Disk.
  12. Click Browse. Then select the directory where the driver files are located (e.g., your desktop or the directory you chose in step 1), and choose the ZSD.INF (or ZSD) file. Click Open to continue.
  13. On the Install from Disk screen, click OK.
  14. Select the appropriate Zebra printer and click Next.
  15. When the Name Your Printer screen displays, use the default printer name or change the printer name. Click Next.
  16. Select Yes or No depending on whether you want to print a test page. Click Next.
  17. Click Finish to complete the installation.
  18. A Hardware Installation screen may appear that indicates the driver has not passed Windows® Logo testing. If so, select Continue Anyway. The printer driver installation has completed.
  19. When the printer icon displays, right-click the printer and select Properties.
  20. Select the Ports tab, select the Com port being used, and select Configure Port.
  21. Make sure the flow control setting is Xon/Xoff.
  22. Click OK and then click Close. The printer setup is complete.
