Visibility and predictability

This tier lets you see and manage your shipments in one place. So you can keep customers and employees updated about possible delays in advance, and make contingency plans when you need to.


FedEx global shipment visibility1: Package-level insights show you where your shipments are in near real time.

Delay predictions: Know ahead of time when to expect delays so you can communicate and plan.

Weather advisories: See weather events that could affect shipments near their destinations.

Customizable views and reports: Get the information you need in the format that makes the most sense for your operations.

FedEx Surround Preferred:
Intervention and prioritization

With this level, you get all the features available through FedEx Surround Select, plus enhanced intervention, care, and handling.


Proactive monitoring: A dedicated team of specialists monitors your at-risk shipments 24/7.

Package prioritization: Your shipments get priority treatment for handling and intervention when needed, based on your shipment monitoring and intervention service level and the healthcare identifiers. 

In-network intervention and recovery: We’ll act on specific shipments at your direction, including expediting, upgrading the service, changing the delivery address, reattempting delivery, returning the shipment to the sender, and other on-demand requests.

Healthcare identification, monitoring, and intervention: We’ll tag your healthcare shipments to allow for easier tracking, prioritizing, and intervention when needed.

FedEx Surround Premium:
Top-tier, dedicated support

This tier gives you all the capabilities from FedEx Surround Select and FedEx Surround Preferred, plus priority boarding and the highest level of prioritization during handling and recovery. It also gives you even more proactive in-network and out-of-network intervention when available, based on your preferences.* We provide this hands-on support using sensor placement. 


Priority boarding: Your FedEx shipments are loaded onto the aircraft or truck before non-Premium shipments. (Determined by handling code.)

Intervention out of network: In many cases, we can intervene using out-of-network agents when needed to complete deliveries as soon as possible.

Top-tier intervention support: Get support from a proactive intervention team.

Proactive cold chain recovery: If your shipment is at risk of exceeding your specified temperature range, we’ll proactively replenish dry ice or gel packs and/or use cold storage.

On-package sensor monitoring: FedEx monitoring teams get precise package location data through SenseAware ID. We’ll place lightweight sensors onto your package at pickup for near real-time location and visibility throughout the shipping process.3

* This is a summary table and more capabilities are available. Interventions such as out of network expedite and cold chain care are also available at the customer’s request. Additional fees or transportation costs may be incurred depending on the intervention needed and/or the level of FedEx Surround service selected.

1 Global Predictive Insights: While global shipments are visible and receive predictive insights in the FedEx Surround dashboard, FedEx Surround Preferred and FedEx Surround Premium will continue to support monitoring and interventions for Canada domestic shipments and shipments to countries where FedEx Surround monitoring and intervention is available. To use special service options for monitoring and intervention and healthcare identifiers, customer shipping automation required: FSMS 20.08 or higher, FSM/Café 3800 or higher, FAPI, Fedex.com (MAGI), GSM 2404 or higher.

2 Most common interventions include: expedite, upgrade delivery/upgrade service, change of delivery address, re-attempt, expedite same day (out-of-network), return to sender, on-demand care (at customer request or based on customer's tier level). Available interventions for a given shipment may vary. Additional fees or transportation cost may be incurred depending on intervention needed and level of FedEx Surround service selected. Based on configurable instructions  (Includes re-attempt for same day delivery). Interventions are based on FedEx's best available options to minimize wrong day late and/or maximize right day late and are not guaranteed to preserve service but are used to mitigate risks, enhance recovery, and/or help preserve shipment integrity. Refer to FedEx service guide for more information on additional fees.

3 FedEx SenseAware IDSM  (SAID) is a lightweight sensor-based logistics device that delivers a new level of precise package location data via Bluetooth Low Energy to WiFi access points or established gateway devices throughout the FedEx Express network. SAID sensors are applied to packages by courier at time of pickup (or at the origin station) and removed prior to final delivery. Sensors enhance internal visibility with near real time location facilitating FedEx operations and the FedEx Surround support teams’ as-needed intervention efforts. ​SA ID sensors are applied to the following shipments:

  • Domestic: FedEx First Overnight® (FO), FedEx Priority Overnight® (PO) where FedEx Surround Premium or FedEx Priority Alert (PA/PA+) service is selected, FedEx 1Day® Freight (F1) where FedEx Surround Premium or FedEx Priority Alert (PA/PA+) service is selected.
  • International: FedEx International First® (IF) (between U.S. and Canada); FedEx International Priority® (IP) (between U.S. and Canada) where FedEx Surround Premium or FedEx Priority Alert (PA/PA+) service is selected, and FedEx International Priority Freight (IPF) (between U.S. and Canada) where FedEx Surround Premium or FedEx Priority Alert (PA/PA+) service is selected.

We work with third parties for some deliveries and last-mile visibility may not be available for those shipments. FedEx SenseAware ID is a lightweight sensor-based logistics device that delivers a new level of precise package location data via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to WiFi access points or established gateway devices throughout the FedEx Express network.
