What is a Bill of Lading (BOL)?

  • It acts as a receipt and shipping label for LTL freight shipments and has all the details of what you’re shipping, the origin and the destination.
  • It helps us calculate freight charges and includes the purchase order number, other reference numbers and freight class for the shipment.
  • It should be provided to the shipping carrier when an LTL freight shipment is picked up and will be given to the consignee/recipient at delivery.
  • It’s a legal contract of carriage that has the terms and conditions for FedEx Freight® shipments. Some of the terms are subject to change depending on the type of shipment. All services are subject to the terms and conditions of the FXF 100 Series Rules Tariff.

Who provides a BOL?

The shipper fills it out, or generates one online, prints it and provides it to the freight shipper by giving it to the driver at pickup.

When is a BOL required?

It's required for all LTL freight shipments, including shipments that go through a freight forwarder.

However, we have a new system that speeds up pickups and cuts down on rekeying errors. When you use our shipping solutions—fedex.com, FedEx Ship Manager® Software, FedEx Web Services or LTL Select—to generate your shipment, you don’t need a BOL. Electronic shipping labels are automatically created that act as the BOL. You can keep the BOL for your records and put the labels on your pallets. The driver doesn’t need the BOL. The best part is that there are individual shipping labels for each pallet. So you get extra security and pallet-level tracking.

Hazmat shipments and Shipper Load and Count customers will still need a traditional BOL.

FedEx Express® Freight shipments do not need a BOL.

What is a VICS Bill of Lading?

  • VICS stands for Voluntary Interindustry Commerce Solutions.
  • It’s a straight Bill of Lading, plus a supplemental commodity form used in the retail industry.
  • The commodity form has space for more information about your shipment. Shippers can put information from their inventory management systems in the extra space to help them
    track inventory.
