Tech Chat: Marketing

I’m Michael, owner of Fiddlershop. As an entrepreneur, I know you need the right marketing tools to attract and engage new customers — and keep them. Let me and some of my peers share some insights. We’ve been in your shoes, whether you’re starting out or scaling up.

Reach them. Show them. Nurture them.

These fundamental marketing concepts are vital to your small business’s traction and longevity. And the abundance of tools to help you accomplish them can be overwhelming. Here are some tried-and-true tactics that will help you get the word out, create impactful visual content and manage your customer relationships.

Email is the most basic, yet powerful, marketing tool used by small businesses. Yes, it’s still going strong, even in a world of AI and AR. Use it to reach new customers. Drive traffic to your site. Send marketing campaigns to the right audiences at the right time — desktop or mobile. And the best part? It’s easy. It’s cost-effective. And it works.

“Constant Contact is ideal for start-ups — helpful and inexpensive. The drag-and-drop function makes creating emails easy. And you can add a Google Analytics link in your emails to track conversions. A word of caution: They charge by the number of email addresses you have in your database, so keep those updated.”

“Klaviyo is affordable, next-level email marketing. Automated email sequences, or flows, free up time for daily operations. You can send welcome and follow-up emails to customers. Schedule reminder emails for products that ‘run out.’ You can even A/B test emails to get better results. It can change your business.” —Michael, Fiddlershop

Images and graphics

Images and graphics tell your story without speaking a word. And you don’t need a graphic design degree to create them. There’s no shortage of tools that can help you enhance your email, create an image to post, or design your website. Here are a couple of Kat’s favorites.

"Canva is my favorite app and totally worth the premium subscription. Use it to make line sheets and wholesale line sheets. Design business cards, optimize images and create logos. From formatted social media posts to website banners, you can edit, upload and optimize for all of your design needs."

"FotoFuze is a great app that lets you edit and enhance product photos to make them look professional, even if they’re taken with a smart phone. You can upload all product imagery and outline the features needed to be compliant for some retailers. And they have free and paid options.”

Online advertising

When you advertise online, you can target the people who are actively searching for your product or service. They’re there. You just need to find them. And one way to do that is Google Ads. You pay per click, but you can set a budget and change it any time.
