RaceView - How it Works:

The technology that enables the virtual representation of the live race within RaceView is powered by a complex system that includes GPS technology, Radio Frequency, Satellites and 3D models of the tracks and cars.

  • GPS units are placed in each car that communicate with a satellite that detects the location of the car 5 times per second.
  • The location data is then combined with telemetry from the cars and is transmitted via radio frequency to base stations around the track that then sends the data to a production truck onsite.
  • The car location and telemetry data is then processed and sent out via the Internet from the production truck to your computer once the race starts.
  • When you start RaceView, your computer automatically downloads all of the virtual cars and the virtual track for the race you are about to view. The location and telemetry data is then synchronized live with the cars and track once the race starts, allowing you to interact with the race live.
  • Because of the complexity of the system and the fact that RaceView is depending on communication signals from cars traveling nearly 200mph, there are some occasions why you might not have access to a car within RaceView. For example:

  • Sometimes GPS constellations will temporarily fall out of range which can suspend our location data transfer. This is similar to when a common GPS unit in a car has to 'reacquire satellite connection'.
  • As always during most races, there are instances when car equipment (e.g. antenna) can be damaged. This can occur during a crash or incidental car contact which may interrupt our signal.
  • At a NASCAR venue there can be temporary radio frequency interference due to a variety of types of communication devices at the event that could interrupt our signal momentarily.

You probably have a pop-up blocker trying to protect you from advertising. Some versions of internet explorer or Firefox ship with this, or you may have installed one. Look at the top of the browser window for a message from your browser, right click it, and tell it that it's ok to launch or run the application.

Microsoft Internet Explorer will also give some users an activeX control warning, which will prevent the application from running. Take the same steps as above to avoid this issue.

If you are still having issues with TrackPass RaceView, you may need to update your video card drivers. First, you will need to verify your video cards manufacturer. To do so, please complete the following steps:

  • Click Start, then Run
  • In the Run window, type dxdiag
  • This will run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. From that window, click on the Display tab at the top.
  • In the field labled Manufacturer, you will find the manufacturer of your video card.
  • From the Display tab, you will want to use the Chip Type area to determine the manufacturer of the chip as their drivers are the most commonly supported and tested throughout the industry. Should that field not have anything listed, you can use the Name field to determine the common card name which is our second recommendation.

Top 3 most common video card manufacturers:

  • ATI - http://ati.de/support/driver.html
  • NVIDIA - http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
  • Intel - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Support_Intel.aspx?iid=home+hdr_nav2_download -
  • Click Graphics on the left side of the screen. Now choose Desktop Graphics Controllers or Laptop Graphics Controllers depending on whether you have a dektop computer or a laptop (notebook) computer.

On the driver page, every driver should be marked by a date. You will want to compare this date to the date listed on the Display tab in the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. If the date on the driver page is more recent than what DirectX shows, you'll want to update your drivers.
