How to estimate shipping costs with FedEx

How cost is calculated for FedEx shipments

One easy way to estimate shipping costs is to use our online shipping rates calculator. (If you have an account with us, be sure to sign in using the Sign Up or Log In link at the top of the page before entering your information to get the most accurate pricing.)

The calculator will ask you to provide some information about your shipment, including:

  • Where it’s coming from (by origin ZIP code)
  • Where it’s going (by destination ZIP code)
  • If it’s going to a residence
  • What kind of packaging you’re using
  • How many packages you’re sending
  • Package size and weight (including dimensions, if you’re using your own packaging)
  • When you’re sending it

Each of these factors affects your estimated cost. Below you’ll find more information on some of these factors, presented in the order you’ll see them on the online shipping rates calculator

Your shipment’s origin and destination

Generally, the farther your shipment needs to go, the more you’ll pay to ship it. This is true whether you’re shipping domestically or internationally.

A note about international shipping

Your estimated cost might be affected by changes in currency or the addition of duties, taxes, or other fees you might be asked to pay when you ship internationally. Go to FedEx International Shipping Assist for help with shipments outside the United States.

Package type, dimensions, and weight

The shipping service you choose will have the greatest impact on the price you pay. (That selection comes in the next step of the calculator.) But your shipping price is also partially determined by the size and weight of your package. We calculate prices using either the dimensional weight (dim weight) or actual weight of the package—whichever is greater. (Dim weight reflects a package’s density—that is, the amount of space a package occupies in relation to its actual weight.)

Usually, the bigger and heavier your shipment is, the more it will cost. That’s why it’s important to choose a box that’s big enough for your items and packing materials, but not so big that it increases your package’s dim weight needlessly.

How to compare shipping options by cost

If you have an account, be sure to sign in using the Sign Up or Log In link at the top of the page before entering your shipment information. This will ensure that your estimate reflects any applicable discounts. After you’ve entered your details into the online shipping rates calculator, you’ll see your options and estimated costs. Depending on your shipment details, you might see FedEx® Retail Rates, or a tabbed view with FedEx Retail Rates and FedEx One Rate® options.

FedEx Retail Rates screen

Compare using retail rates

On the shipping options page, the choices range from premium overnight shipping to cheaper ground shipping, which provides delivery within 3 to 7 days. Click the down arrow to the right of the orange price box to see a breakdown of the cost, including applicable surcharges and fees.

FedEx One Rate screen

Compare using FedEx One Rate

If you’re shipping a FedEx box that weighs less than 50 lbs. or a FedEx envelope that weighs less than 10 lbs., you’ll see a tab at the top of the rates section called FedEx One Rate. FedEx One Rate is a predictable, flat-rate shipping option that can potentially be more affordable than the retail rates.

Answers to your questions about estimating shipping costs

Shipping estimates

Why does my price say “estimated”?

Our online shipping rates calculator estimates shipping cost based on the information you input, like how much the package weighs, its dimensions, the currency conversion rate (if you’re shipping internationally), and other factors. Your charges could be different from the estimate if any of these factors change.

Why was my final shipment price more than originally quoted?

Charges at the time of shipment might be different than those estimated if the package weight, dimensions, origin, destination, currency conversion rate, or other factors change between the time a customer receives an estimate and the time they actually ship the package. Be sure you enter the correct information into the online shipping rates calculator. If you’re not sure of the weight or dimensions, consider buying a small scale and measuring your shipments with a tape measure or ruler. You can download a measuring app onto your smartphone if needed. Doing these things should help you enter more accurate information into the calculator for better estimates in the future.

Shipping cost

How much does it cost to ship with FedEx? Which service is the cheapest?

We base your rate on factors like how far your package has to travel (using ZIP codes or postal codes, depending on international destinations/origins), how quickly you need it to arrive, how big it is, how much it weighs, and whether or not you choose shipping insurance. Use our free online shipping rates calculator to estimate your shipping cost, compare options, and find the cheapest way to ship.

Why do rates change?

Online shipping estimates can be affected by many different factors. Changes in fuel costs, delivery and pickup conditions, special handling requirements, holiday package volumes, and special circumstances that affect network capacity (like COVID-19) can cause prices to fluctuate. And keep in mind, the prices generated by our calculators are just estimates. They’re based on the variables you enter, like your package’s weight and your shipment’s origin and destination ZIP codes. If any of those factors change between the time you request your estimate and the time you ship your package, the actual price will be different from what was estimated. See current rates or find out about current surcharges and fees that could affect your rates.

How much will it cost to pay for a return shipment?

Returns are common, especially with customers buying so much online. Return shipment costs vary. (If you receive a pre-printed label or code from the shipper, your return shipment may even be free.) We’ll tell you everything you need to know. Find out how to return a package with FedEx

How can I save on shipping for myself or my business?

There are several ways to reduce your shipping costs to make them more affordable, whether they’re personal or for business. Sign up for a free FedEx account to get discounts when shipping express, ground, or freight. Stay tuned for coupons. Sign up for My FedEx Rewards for exclusive offers. Always compare and choose the right shipping options for your situation. And get tips on how to become an efficient shipper.

Does the packaging I use affect my cost?

Yes. The size of the box should accommodate your items and enough cushioning or packaging material to protect it. But your box shouldn’t be bigger than it needs to be, since that can drive up the cost needlessly.

Your shipping price is based on either the dimensional weight (dim weight) or actual package weight—whichever is greater. (Dim weight reflects a package’s density—that is, the amount of space a package occupies in relation to its actual weight.) Find out more about dim weight or get expert packing tips.

Package pickups

Will FedEx pick up my shipment?

Yes. You can either request a one-time pickup or, if you ship more regularly, you can schedule recurring pickups. This is a popular option for high-volume shippers. Get the details on scheduling a pickup

International shipments

How much does it cost to ship internationally?

International shipping is more complex than domestic. Shipping costs are based on the destination country, what you’re shipping, and how much the package weighs, among other factors. International fees, duties, and taxes might also cause your shipping costs to be higher. If you have some basic information about your shipment, you can enter it into our free international shipping tool to get an estimate of what you’ll pay, including duties and taxes.
